Year of the Bible

Year of the Bible

"This is the day that the Lord has made.  Let us rejoice and be glad in it."  Most of us are familiar with this 24th verse from Psalm 118, but how many of the other 31,141 verses in the Bible have you read or do you know?

We all are well aware that life is full of confusing twists and turns and dead ends, but God has given us His instruction manual - a GPS to navigate our way thru it all - G od's P owerful S criptures!  As Hebrews 4:12 reminds us, "...the word of God is living and active."  And Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."  When we are reading the Bible, we are not just reading some stories: we are reading God's own Words...God is speaking directly to us!

Some of us have already read the whole Bible thru - maybe several times.  Others of us have started with good intentions but got sidetracked and did not finish.  And some of us may never have given it much thought one way or the other.

With our new Pew Bibles now in place, we on your Evangelism Board want to celebrate!  So we invite you all to join us in declaring 2015 as the Year of the Bible in our community here at Faith Lutheran Church with the goal for every one of us to read God's entire GPS this year.

We are proposing a simple plan comprised of daily readings with selections from the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms and Proverbs - about 20 minutes a day will take us through the whole Bible by New Years Eve.  We thought breaking it up in these 4 parts would be much more palatable than, for example, a full dose of Leviticus for a week or more straight that might just push some of us over the edge.  Sometimes less is more.  And isn't it exciting to know that everyone here is reading the same thing on any particular day!  The selected Scriptures for each day will be published weekly in the Sunday bulletin and monthly in the newsletter.  They will also be listed on our church website.

We encourage everyone to participate and discuss what you are reading with your family and friends and neighbors.  We are even giving you some tools to make this easier and periodically we will have articles in the newsletter and on the website as encouragement and with suggestions and explanations.

The first of these tools is a bookmark.  One side is an alphabetical listing of all the books in the Bible with a space for you to enter the page # from your own Bible for your use at home.  The other side is a handy reference for verses that are expecially helpful and comforting in our times of stress.  One of these bookmarks is in each of the Pew Bibles in the hymnal racks and extra copies are on the ledge beneath the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall.  We urge you to use this guide and share it with others you know - as well as those you don't - especially those who do not yet know Jesus as their Lord and Savior.  We also encourage you as you read to develop your own list of those verses particularly meaningful to you.

In 2002, Christian author Francine Rivers wrote these powerful words to the reader in the Preface of her Mark of the Lion trilogy - which we think says it perfectly:

"I pray that you will...pick up the Bible with a new excitement and anticipation of a real encounter with the Lord Himself.  May you search Scripture for the sheer joy of being in God's presence...As you drink from the deep well of Scripture, the Lord will refresh and cleanse you, mold you and re-create you through His Living Word.  For the Bible is the very breath of God, giving life eternal to those who seek him."

Why should I read the Bible?

The Bible is a sacred writing, a gift given to us by our Creator so we can know Him in a personal way.  Although we can hear from God in a number of ways, He speaks most clearly to us through His Word.  Yet sadly, the Bible often sits untouched on a shelf, collecting dust.  So why do so many believers neglect it?

In her book Spiritually Strong: The Ultimate 6-Week Guide to Building Your Body and Soul , Kristen Feola lists the following as the five most common reasons people give for not reading the Bible on a regular basis:

Excuse #1: "I don't have the time."  Truth:  We're all given twenty-four hours in each day.  You do have the time.

Excuse #2: "It's boring."  Truth:  The Bible is anything but boring!  It contains stories of miraculous healings, supernatural events, and people being raised from the dead.  Pretty exciting stuff, if you ask me!

Excuse #3:  "I can't understand it."  Truth:  The Bible can be intimidating at times.  It speaks of events that are unexplainable, in language that isn't always easy to decipher.  However, when you approach the study of God's Word with a true desire to learn, the Lord will give you insight and understanding.

Excuse #4:  "It's not relevant to my life."  Truth:  Even though the Bible was written thousands of years ago, it still speaks to our circumstances today.  Its truth is unchanging and eternal.

Excuse #5:  "I don't get anything out of it."  Truth:  To get something out of the Bible, you have to read it with an open mind and heart.  You have to be willing to listen to what God is saying, then learn to apply His truth to the specific situations in your life.

It is impossible to grow closer to the Lord without reading/studying His Word.  God loves us more than we can ever imagine and the Bible is His love letter to you.  The pages of Scripture have the power to transform our lives.

I have stored up Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you.  (Psalm 119:11)

What can God's word do for you?

Last month we shared from Kristen Feola's book, Spiritually Strong: The Ultimate 6-Week Guide to Building Your Body and Soul , the five most common excuses people give for not reading the Bible.  They are not good ones, and we can be assured that God sees right thru them.  This month we focus on what God's Word can do for you when read regularly.

God's Word can:

Save you. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. - James 1:21

Help you grow in wisdom. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever! - Psalm 111:10

Teach you how to live.  All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Protect you from being deceived. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. - Colossians 2:8

Develop your faith. So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. - Romans 10:17

Keep you from sin. I have stored up Your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against You. - Psalm 119:11

Fill you with hope. For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.- Romans 15:4

Bring you joy. For I find my delight in Your commandments, which I love. - Psalm 119:47

Bring you peace. Great peace have those who love Your law; nothing can make them stumble. - Psalm 119:165

Prosper your life. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. - Joshua 1:8

When Moses was old and about to die, he gathered the Israelites together for his farewell address (we read it in Deuteronomy) in which he pleaded with the people to understand that nothing is more important than knowing God's Word and living according to His commands. Moses also assured the people that their obedience would result in God's blessing. What was true then is still true today. Give yourself to diligent study of the Bible, and you'll experience the victorious life God has for you and know His favor in a special way.

To love God is to love His Word.  Your can't do one without the other.

Keep On...Keeping On

We are now half way through our calendar year and thus half way through the Bible with our daily readings.  Are you feeling inspired yet?  Encouraged?  Enlightened?  Strengthed?  Comforted??? We hope all of these!!!

Since many of us at Faith belong to the "Q-tip Generation" (which for you uninitiated means white-haired seniors), we hope you caught the June 10th reading from Proverbs 16:31 "Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life."  If you missed that one, just think about all the other jewels you are missing out on every day!

In his sermon on June 14th, Pastor Berkesch spoke about the many gifts God continually showers down on us that are free for our use - among them the beauty of nature, sunlight, the air we breathe - with His greatest gift to us being His Word as found in the Bible.  Pastor said:

"You own a Bible. And I don't just mean the Book you hold in your hands and read with your eyes.  I mean all the promises and blessings and strength and hope the Book provides, of sins forgiven and a life that never ends.  The Bible is truly one of God's greatest gifts of all."

How wonderful is all that! What a blessing we have here in the United States to be able to freely own and read the Bible openly and share it publicly whenever we want.  In many countries, Christians are being persecuted and murdered for their faith and for just possessing a Bible, let alone getting caught reading it.  Let us not squander our hard-won freedom.

The Bible is God's love letter to us.  The most loving response we can give Him is to read it and share it with others.

Let the Bible Be Your Mood Elevator

In one of his e-newsletters, Rev. Rick Warren (author of A Purpose-Driven Life) presented a devotional that speaks directly to our Year of the Bible program and gives us a new way to look at our daily Bible readings.  He says (as paraphrased):

Are you down in the dumps? Do you need a mood elevator?  Put down that piece of chocolate cake.  Don't have a pity party.  Pick up your Bible instead.

You need a Word break!

God gave us the Bible to encourage us.  One way to think of the Bible is as a mood elevator.  Paul wrote in Romans 15:4, "For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope" (ESV).

Everything in Scripture is written for our encouragement.  That's a big statement - but it's true!  Even the tough parts of God's Word are there to ultimately encourage our lives in the right direction.

That's why we need to spend time alone with God every single day.  However you do it, you need alone time with God, reading his Word, and talking to Him.

If you're discouraged and have lost hope, you're not spending time in God's Word.  If you were, you wouldn't be discouraged.  The more you read God's Word when you're down, the more He lifts you up.

So the next time you feel discouraged, don't come home and turn on the television.  Instead, open up your Bible and read it.  Listen to Dr. Luke instead of Dr. Phil.

God's Word has the power to change your life.  It has God's power in it; nothing else does.  The Bible will give you true encouragement.

Disaster Preparedness

In 2004, our national government declared September as Emergency Preparedness Month.  The month-long campaign encourages Americans to take steps to prepared for emergencies in their homes, businesses, schools, and communities.  It is a good time to double-check our survival kits and make sure we are prepared in case of a major disaster or pandemic that could disrupt or endanger our lives and well-being.

Have you ever thought about how anything nature or man can throw at us is nothing compared to the eternal disaster that waits at death for those who have not accepted Christ Jesus as their Savior?  Shame on us if we have not done everything we can to keep that from happening to someone we know!  We are the disaster survival kits for their souls!!

Be bold for the Lord!  Now that is true disaster preparation.  Easier said than done?  Of course...but just as God told Joshua at this commissioning, "Be strong and courageous.  Do no be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)

God has given us everything we need to prevent our eternal disaster - it's all in His Word, the Bible.  The Bible also contains everything we need to know for sharing His love and grace.  Just remember this catchy phrase to make it really easy: GRACE=God's Riches At Christ's Expense.

Year of the Bible - Grace

Our September column discussed disaster preparedness for our souls and the importance of our sharing God's GRACE message with non-believers.

Still feel like you need something more-something simple-to get the discussion started?  This story-tool is just the thing.  It has been on the Internet and Pastor even used it in a recent sermon, but it so clearly and so simply explains the true message of God's grace we are repeating it here:

The story is told of a college professor who did his best to communicate the Gospel message to his class.  But no matter how hard he tried, many of his students couldn't care less.  It was, after all, a required class.

But there was one student, Steve, who had come to college and planned to go on to the seminary to study for the ministry, so he took the class seriously.  And not only was he a good student, he was popular and he was the starting center on the school football team.  The professor asked if he could stay for a moment after class.

He asked, "How many pushups can you do?"  Steve answered, "I do about two hundred every night."  "That's pretty good," said the prof. "Could you do three hundred?"  "I've never done three hundred at a time."  "Could you do three hundred in sets of ten?  I have a class project in mind, and I need you to do about three hundred pushups in sets of ten for this to work.  Can you do it?"  He answered, "I think I can."

Friday came and Steve came early and sat in front of the class.  Then, when all the students were seated, the professor pulled out a huge box of donuts.  Now these weren't the normal kind of donuts.  These were the extra large, fancy kind, with cream centers, frosting and sprinkles.  He instantly had the attention of everyone in the class.

The prof went to the first girl in the first row and asked, "Cyndi, would you like one of these donuts?"  "Sure," she replied.  Then he turned to Steve and asked, "Would you do ten pushups so Cyndi can have a donut?'  "No problem," said Steve.  The prof then went to the next person in the row and asked, "Joe, would you like a donut?"  "Of course," answered Joe.  Again, the prof asked, "Steve, would you do ten pushups so Joe can have a donut?"  Again, Steve hit the floor and did a quick ten.  So it went down the first row of students.

Then the prof started down the second row and came to Scott.  Now Scott was on the basketball team and was a pretty good athlete in his own right.  When he asked him if he wanted a donut, Scott answered, "Can I do my own pushups?"  The prof answered, "No.  Steve has to do them for you."  Scott said, "Then I don't want one."  The prof shrugged his shoulders, turned to Steve and asked, "Would you do ten pushups so Scott can have the donut he doesn't want?"  Obediently, Steve started to do ten pushups.  Scott said, "I said I didn't want one."  The prof answered, "This is my classroom, my class, and my donuts.  If you don't want it, just leave it on your desk.

By this time, Steve was starting to slow down.  Beads of sweat formed on his brow.  As the prof started down the third row, the students were getting angry.  "Do you want a donut?" he asked another.  When she answered, "No," again Steve did ten for the donut she didn't want.  And so it went for the rest of the class.  Drops of sweat glistened on the floor beneath him.  His arms and face were red.

Before long, some students from other classes heard what was happening, so they came in and sat down on the steps along the side of the classroom.  The prof did a quick count and realized there were now thirty-five students in the room.  He began to worry if Steve could do it after all.

When he came to the end of the last row, he asked, "Steve, do you think we should give a donut to these five, who are not members of our class?  And you realize that if we do, you'll have to do ten pushups for each of them."

"Give them a donut." Steve said.  Finally, when the prof stood before the last student, she was filled with compassion.  She said, "Why can't I help him?"  The prof answered "When I decided to do this, I looked at my grade book and Steve is the only one with a perfect grade.  Everyone else has either failed a test, skipped a class, or offered me inferior work.  He and I made a deal for your sake.  He has to do it alone."

And as Steve finished his last pushup, his arms buckled beneath him and he fell to the floor.  Two students helped him to a seat.

Then the prof said, "My wish is that you today would begin to understand the riches of grace and mercy that God has given through the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus.  He gave His all for us.  Whether or not you accept His gift, the price has been paid.  Wouldn't it be foolish to leave it lying on your desk?"

Now read this story again, but this time replace Steve with Jesus, the donuts with eternal salvation, and the students for yourself.  This is a perfect example of God's GRACE - God's Riches At Christ's Expense.

Then travel with your friend down the Romans Road to Salvation:

(1) Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."  We have all sinned.  We have all done things that are displeasing to God.  There is no one who is innocent.  Romans 3:10-18 gives a detailed picture of what sin looks like in our lives.

(2) Romans 6:23 teaches us about the eternal consequences of sin:  "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord."

(3) Romans 5:8 declares: "But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."  Jesus Christ died for us!  Jesus' death paid for the price of our sins.  Jesus' resurrection proves that God accepted Jesus' death as the payment for our sins.

(4) Romans 10:9 offers:  "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."  Because of Jesus' death on our behalf, all we have to do is believe in him, trusting His death as the payment for our sins - and we will be saved! Romans 10:13 says it again, "For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."  Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins and rescue us from eternal death.  Salvation, the forgiveness of sins, is available to anyone who will trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

(5) The final stop on the Romans Road to salvation is the results of salvation.  Romans 5:1 has this wonderful message, "therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."  Roman 8:1 teaches us, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for our sins.  Finally, we have this precious promise of God from Romans 8:38-39 , "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels not rulers, not things present nor things to come, not powers, not height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

********

Here is a simple prayer you can pray if you would like to share in the joy of eternal life.  The words themselves will not save you.  Only faith in Jesus Christ can provide salvation!  "God, I know that I have sinned against you and deserve Your punishment.  I am truly sorry for my many sins.  I believe Jesus Christ took my punishment on Himself so that through faith in Him I could be forgiven.  With your help, I place my trust in You for salvation.  Thank You for Your wonderful love and forgiveness and grace - the gift of eternal life!  Amen!"

"The Bible is the most priceless possession of the human race."

This statement was made by William H. Halley (born 1874), an American minister and religious writer who held the strong conviction that everyone ought to read the Bible daily.  With the goal of helping people do exactly that, he published his first small 16-page "almanac" of Biblical information in 1927.  He frequently added updates right up to his death in 1965 when the 24th edition was published containing 860 pages. Halley's Bible Handbook remains a valuable resource for ordinary readers and Bible study leaders alike.

When have you ever read a book that states right on the front title page: "THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THIS BOOK IS This Simple Suggestion:  THAT EACH CHURCH HAVE A CONGREGATIONAL PLAN OF BIBLE READING."

That is what our Board has worked toward this year.  If you are among those doing the suggested readings each day, you have nearly finished reading the entire Bible this year.  If you are among those who are behind or started late or have not yet started at all, keep at it.  Don't give up.  You will find it deliciously rewarding!

Halley goes on to say, "Every Christian ought to be a Bible reader.  It is the one habit, which, if done in the right spirit, more than any other one habit, will make a Christian what he ought to be in every way.  If any church could get its people as a whole to be devoted readers of God's Word, it would revolutionize the church.  If the churches of any community, as whole, could get their people, as a whole, to be regular readers of the Bible, it would not only revolutionize the churches, but it would purge and purify the community as nothing else could do.

We hope you feel revitalized as you do the daily readings.  And when you finish December 31st, please don't consider yourself "done".  You are really just getting started.  Keep on reading; repetition inspires understanding.  We on your Evangelism Board are excited to see how many people follow along in the Pew Bibles with the Scripture readings at each worship service.  It is really true that the more Scripture we read, the hungrier we become for more.

Then we want to share it.  It is important that we not keep this exciting, life-changing Book and its contents to ourselves.  We must share it with those who do not know about Jesus' saving grace.  Sharing the Bible with friends every day is a beautiful thing.  It's how Scripture was first experienced thousands of years ago-within community.

There is no "right" or "wrong" way to go about reading the Bible, but it does feel less formidable if approached with some system in mind.  The reading program we presented this year was just one of those methods, but there are many more.  In January we will be handing out a pamphlet reprint titled How to Read the Bible which will give you some good guidelines.  Extra copies will also be available in the Fellowship Hall for you to share.  Please remember...these are just suggestions.  The important thing is to just read and to do it with the right attitude.

Can't you just sense God's smile every time we read His Word?  And how about that big grin on His face every time we share it!
